Which unbraked couplings do I need for my trailer?

The coupling is an essential part of your trailer. It is used to attach the Trailer to your car. We have a wide range of unbraked couplings of different brands such as AL-KO. Winterhoff, Knott and Albe. For unbraked trailers, the brand of coupling is less important, but the connection size is even more so. Therefore, we always recommend using the same type of coupling to avoid connection problems. So you have a V-coupling connection, but also 30 mm tube, 40 mm, 45 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm, 70 mm, 50/51 mm (round), 60 mm (round), 70 mm (round) connections. Do you have questions about our range of unbraked couplings? Or are you not quite sure which unbraked coupling fits? Then feel free to contact our customer service team. We are happy to help you find the right unbraked coupling. Don't see your desired coupling listed? Please contact us.

What is the correct connection size of the unbraked coupling?

When replacing an unbraked coupling, it is important to consider the following data:

      • Towing capacity - The towing capacity is always 750kg and sometimes like Winterhoff 800 kg. After that, couplings are almost always braked.
      • Attachment shape - the attachment shape is the shape around which the coupling should be attached; it can be rectangular ( tube) or round and comes in different widths.
      • Connection sizes - finally, it is important to check the connection sizes of the bolts to make sure they match the current ones. These can be horizontal, vertical or a combination of both.

How do I secure my unbraked coupling?

      • Hitchlocks - drawbar locks are placed under, above or around the coupling. These hitch locks ensure that the Trailer cannot be hitched and unhitched when locked. Insurers in most cases require you to use an SCM approved lock if you want to insure the Trailer. SCM approved locks can be found here and unapproved Hitchlocks here.
      • Coupling locks - coupling locks are placed in the handle of the coupling and prevent it from going up and down.

How do I maintain my unbraked coupling?

It is important that your Trailer always remains properly attached to the car's tow bar. When play occurs between the towbar and coupling, it is often a matter of wear. Some couplings even feature a wear indicator. With AL-KO couplings, this is often shown in red or green. With Knott, you often see a dash to + or -. Red and the minus sign means the coupling is worn out and in need of replacement, or the coupling is not properly coupled. When there is wear, you should actually arrange for a replacement coupling immediately. This is because it is very dangerous to continue driving with this. Do you see that the unbraked coupling jumps straight to red or the minus sign? Then it is best to have your towbar checked at the garage.
