Which braked trailer coupling do I need?

We recommend always replacing a braked trailer coupling with the same model and brand, unless it is no longer available. Do you want to replace the braked trailer coupling for another model than the one currently fitted? Or perhaps the trailer coupling is no longer available?

Keep the following points in mind:

      • Towing capacity: it is important to know what the minimum towing capacity of the coupling should be.
      • Attachment shape: the attachment shape is the shape around which the coupling should be attached; it can be rectangular or round and comes in different widths.
      • Connection dimensions: finally, it is important to check the connection dimensions to make sure they match the current one. These can be horizontal, vertical or a combination of both.

Material of a braked trailer coupling

There are couplings made of different materials, namely sheet steel and cast iron. Sheet steel braked trailer couplings are suitable for a round drawbar or a tube profile. There are also couplings made for different connections. You then have to fill these with shims. The AL-KO AK270 braked coupling is an example of this. This trailer braked coupling is used as unbraked and braked coupling. It is normal for intensive use of the coupling to cause trailer wear. Unfortunately, you cannot prevent this wear, you can only slow it down. Make sure you lubricate your coupling with WD40 grease at least every six months.

Protection for your braked coupling trailer

There are several ways to secure your Trailer. For example, you have Hitchlocks under the coupling, above the coupling or around the coupling. There are coupling locks that do not need to be connected and disconnected. Insurers often require the Trailer to be secured with SCM approved locks. We also offer SCM approved locks for your braked trailer coupling. It is useful to know, if you have an AL-KO lock, that there is a suitable lock for every braked AL-KO coupling. Other types of trailer locks include Parking poles, bracket locks, Coupling locks and Wheel clamps.

What accessories do I need for my trailer coupling?

It is useful to order a softdock as well. A softdock is placed over the top of the coupling and ensures that no damage occurs when the coupling hits another car. In addition, it is mandatory to have a breakaway cable. This is because a breakaway cable prevents the Trailer from detaching when the coupling is off. Another thing that might come in handy is a drawbar scale. With a drawbar scale, you can put pressure from the Trailer on the ball of the car is. So consider these accessories when buying your braked trailer coupling.

Our brands for braked trailer couplings:

      • AL-KO
      • Albe
      • Knott
      • Winterhoff

Do you still have questions about which coupling you need, for example? Or is your braked trailer coupling not listed here? Then please contact customer service. We will help you further.
