Buy Trailer couplings, braked or unbraked

We offer a complete range of couplings for trailers. In most cases we recommend replacing a coupling for exactly the same model. Then you can be sure that the connection dimensions and tractive force are the same. Trailer couplings come in braked and unbraked versions. A braked trailer can be recognised by its overrun brake and brake drums. We sell original couplings by Knott, AL-KO, Winterhoff and Albe.

What is a trailer coupling made of?

There are roughly two different couplings. A coupling made of sheet steel and cast iron. Sheet steel trailer couplings are made for a round drawbar or a tube profile. It is important to check the correct size. There are also couplings suitable for multiple connections. Filler plates are then used for these. This applies, for example, to the AL-KO AK270 coupling. This coupling is used for both unbraked trailers and braked trailers. Cast-iron trailer couplings are used for the heavy braked couplings from 2700 kg to 3500 kg. A cast iron trailer coupling is heavier and naturally stronger than a sheet steel coupling. To know if it will fit, pay close attention to the coupling's bolt hole connection points for mounting to the drawbar. All brands use this distinction in material, so it depends on which gross payload you are looking for a coupling. Looking for other Trailer parts for your trailer? Of course, we have those too.

Which trailer coupling do I need?

Do you want to replace your trailer coupling for a different model than the one currently fitted? Then it is important that you take the following points into account:

      • Brand - this is only relevant for braked couplings (for unbraked couplings, the brand does not apply).
      • Braked or unbraked - first it is important to determine whether you have a braked or unbraked coupling
      • Towing capacity - it is important to know what the minimum towing capacity of the coupling should be
      • Attachment shape - the attachment shape is the shape around which the coupling should be attached; it can be rectangular or round and comes in different widths
      • Connection dimensions - finally, it is important to check the connection dimensions to make sure they match the current one. These can be horizontal, vertical or a combination of both

      Lubricate trailer couplings

Due to intensive use, the trailer coupling wears out. This is normal and can only be slowed down by properly greasing the coupling so that it has as little friction as possible. There are many manufacturers of couplings, all of which make high-quality couplings. We recommend always replacing the existing coupling with an identical one to ensure adequate operation. With unbraked trailers this is less important as the coupling does not affect the braking performance of the trailer. With braked trailers, the coupling is part of the overrun brake and therefore part of the braking action. Therefore, you often have to deal with coupling connections on the drawbar. Here, always pay attention to whether you are dealing with vertical or horizontal bolt holes. For reasons of smoothness and safety, the couplings should be lubricated at least every six months to protect all moving parts and bolts from wear.

Do you have a braked coupling trailer? If so, lubricate the overrun brake as well

Important points of interest for trailer coupling operation. The importance of a properly functioning trailer coupling is mandatory and crucial for safe traffic participation. Therefore, when coupling the coupling to the towbar, make sure it is also properly secured. This is often indicated on the side of the coupling with green and red dots.

Which coupling accessories do I need?

A softdock can be placed over the top of the coupling and ensures that when it hits the car neither of them gets damaged. Breakaway cables - a breakaway cable provides an extra bit of safety. If circumstances cause the trailer to become uncoupled, it will still remain attached to the breakaway cable so you can safely stand by the side of the road. A mounted breakaway cable is mandatory while driving. Drawbar weighers - with a drawbar weigher you can weigh what the pressure of the Trailer is on the ball of the car. Hitchlocks - drawbar locks are placed under, above or around the coupling. These hitch locks ensure that the Trailer cannot be hitched and unhitched when locked. Insurers in most cases require you to use an SCM approved lock if you want to insure the Trailer. Coupling locks - coupling locks are placed in the handle of the coupling and ensure that it cannot move up and down.
